1st Day of Christmas - CHRISTMAS!

[ 1 Blanket - We used a quilt ]

We have come from 12 to one, and you know what that means
This is the last surprise - until Santa intervenes
But even though our fun is done, we want you all to know
Your family is a blessing to ours, and we appreciate you so!

Thank you for letting our paths cross, and sharing with us this season
We have loved every minute; both the serious side and the teasin’
Perhaps you are now wondering if our identities will be revealed
Please forgive the mystery; we would like to keep them concealed

Hoping this gift brings happiness; it is one we have been excited to give
For love and warmth make a house a home, and not just a place to live
Time pushes forward so quickly, this Christmas will soon be past
But if we always remember Christ, the feelings of joy will last.

2nd Day of Christmas

[2 sleds]

Day number two, we are almost through
Yet no toys we have given – that just won’t do
So here they are; it is sleds tonight
After all it is winter, and the snow is just right!

Memories you will make as you coast down hills
Escape your worries, enjoy the thrills
Remember there are two, so take a friend
May the sharing of Christmas never end

3rd Day of Christmas

[3 flavors of juice - we used red, blue, and green Hawaiian Punch]

What’s your favorite color – Pink, Purple or White?
What flavor is the best – perhaps you like Sprite?
Mango Pineapple Grape - or maybe Tangerine!
We weren’t quite sure, so we chose Red, Blue, and Green

There was a reason, we picked these colors three
They remind us of Christmas and all the things we see

Red is like Santa’s suit, or Rudolph’s nose when he does fly
Blue is like tinted tinsel, or lights on a house near by
Green reminds us of our tree, or the wreath we hung up high
Enjoy the flavors of Christmas – Give them all a try!

4th Day of Christmas

[Holiday package of 4 jars of jam - with basket of rolls]

Can you believe the 4th day has come?
We brought a little snack – Yum Yum!
There are four different kinds in this tasty set
You will find one in there you like, I would bet
Spread it on some freshly sliced bread
Or for your convenience we brought rolls instead

Something else we wanted to say
One more verse - if we may
We know you are playing our little game
You almost saw us the last time we came!
As we continue our 12 days of sneaking
We hope you won’t catch us – remember NO PEEKING!

5th Day of Christmas

[A set of 5 kitchen knives]

If it’s anything like ours, your household is busy
Some days it’s so much that way, you feel almost dizzy
Schedules fill up quickly; you are always on the run
One thing you have finished, but there’s more to be done

Things get broken often so they end up getting tossed
The worst is when you buy something, and then it’s lost!
The dryer eats your socks; they are nowhere to be found
It seems to me the scissors hide, for this they are renowned!

You saw that gizmo yesterday, but where is it now
The tool you need ended up outside, don’t ask me how
When silverware is missing you can check the kitchen drawer
But you might have better luck if you look on the floor!

We cannot solve the mystery of the mismatched socks
Or give you time to search for things by stopping your clocks
But here’s a set of something that WE frequently misplace
Watch out once you open them, or they’ll be gone without a trace

In case this is what happens, and you are again down to none
At least you have 5 more chances of coming up with one 

6th Day of Christmas

[6 Towels - We used 2 Big Bath Towels for the parents and 3 little hooded bath towels for the little girls. Then threw in a hand towel to make it 6]

At first glance a towel is not much to stop and think about
You get a new one now and then; You throw the old one out
But reflect for just a second on the towel and what it does
Not only what it has come to be, but also what it was

Towels hanging in our bathrooms, or washing all the dishes
For scrubbing down the floor; Used mostly by the Mrs.
Necessity for any Mom to wipe the tears of her child
Helping with all the bumps and cuts until the kid has smiled

What about the Physician, binding a wounded limb
Consider that man bleeding and the difference it made to him
A lost and weary traveler wipes the sweat from his brow
The soft towel on his face is a comfort for him now

So what is the significance – is there a pattern to be seen?
All of these examples – what exactly do they mean?
In each instance you can see that helping is involved
A person giving to another to get their problem solved

Go back many years now, to a different time and place
Another man with a simple towel, and kindness on His face
It is Jesus serving his fellowman; drying disciples feet
Humbly He performs this act as a symbol profound and sweet

As seen in the hands of our Savior, a towel can be a tool
To practice service as He did; This lesson is a jewel
Just an idea to contemplate and from this new thoughts will stem
6 Towels given in love - do what you will with them.

7th Day of Christmas

[7 useful gadgets - Batteries, Screwdriver, Extension Cord, Gloves, Flashlight, Steering Wheel Cover, Duct tape.]

‘Twas the night before Christmas and I did relent
I couldn’t believe how much money I’d spent!
For trains and dolls, for trinkets and toys
Some for the girls and some for the boys
I looked round again to be sure things were right
With the help of my SCREWDRIVER all the screws were in tight
I set up the track for the train I bought Ted
The train went round twice then the BATTERY went dead
If we had just bought what we could afford
It probably would have run with an EXTENSION CORD
But too late for that, the task was looming
Only one thing could get that train ready and zooming
I put on my GLOVES and went over to Zayre
You guessed in my friend, no batteries there!
As I left the store a thought came to me
I had one in the remote of the color TV
Well, I made the switch and put the remote on the chair
I was ready for Christmas with hours to spare
Then out came my wife holding up the remote
She said “TV is broke” so I put on my coat
This time I took my FLASHLIGHT and cap
I gripped the STEERING WHEEL about ready to snap
I made my way to K-mart where I stood in that line
Looking at DUCT TAPE ‘til a quarter past nine

As I came to the checkout my heart leaped with glee
There was one more battery just waiting for me
From somewhere behind I felt someone’s grip
A giant man grabbed it and gave me the slip
Well, it was then I remembered an ad I had seen
Buy a Big Mac and you’ll get your batteries free
So… I bought me a burger I did not want
They were out of batteries so on with the hunt!
Finally I found one at a Servi-Star
I paid for the prize and returned to my car
When I entered my home and began to unpack
My wife said “What’s this battery for - I found in a sack?”
I was out there with the crowds, the pushing and the greed
To buy a battery I didn’t even need!

At last I relaxed in my easy chair
When the Still Small Voice came and found me there
“You’re ready for Christmas with the tinsel and a tree
You’ve got it all together, but what about me?”
I realized then what I had done
I got caught up in the madness and neglected the Son.
The One who should have been my center of thought
Was waiting in the background behind the things I bought
I folded my arms and got down on my knees
And said a little prayer “could you forgive me please”
The best gifts of all - from God we receive
All He asks is that we obey and believe

8th Day of Christmas

[8 rolls of paper towels in a package - we used Bounty that has a big 8 on the front]

It is us again! Did you think we would forget?
By now you should know that we won’t quit.
For practicality sake, our choice tonight
Is 8 rolls of paper towels , just plain white
If there is one thing I hate to be without
It is these handy little things, no doubt
It seems they are always on the list “To Buy”
Next time you won’t have to; these are near by
Perfect to use for each spill and mess
We hope it reduces your Holiday stress

9th Day of Christmas

[9 oranges - we used 8 real oranges and one chocolate orange]

Once there was a little girl all alone
She lived in Denmark on the streets made of stone
Her Mom and Dad and passed away
So she had no nice place to stay

It was December and it was bitter cold
She tried to be strong, brave, and bold
But the winds would blow; she could not take any more
She finally cried, huddled up on the floor

A policeman passed by and took her in his arms
Protecting her from her world of harms
He took her to an orphanage then
And told them there where she had been

They took her in and gave her a bed
Where she could rest her little head
She was happy and settled, so grateful indeed
For the kind man and his unselfish deed

As Christmas grew near, some friends she did make
They told stories at night, and she’d stay wide awake
Always talking about Christmas day
She couldn’t believe all the things they would say

Word of a tree that would appear down the hall
And what she heard next was the best of all
On Christmas morning after a breakfast so bland
They would each receive a gift – how grand!

One small orange for each girl and boy
That news created mountains of joy
To you and I that seems hardly a present
But for her the thought was abundantly pleasant

Her excitement grew with each day that passed
When would she get her orange at last?
On Christmas Eve she just had to peek
As she snuck down the stairs, they made a creak

The headmaster heard her sneaking about
He sternly declared that she would go without
Her orange would be taken away on the morrow
Her curiosity and delight was now sorrow

She could not believe her Christmas fate
For another chance, a whole year she must wait
She fell asleep, her face wet with tears
She was filled with disappointment and fears

The sun came up and the children were giddy
All except her - she only felt pity
She could not face the punishment and shame
The others ate breakfast, but she never came

Later, her friends returned to the room
She tried not to show them her state of gloom
They handed her a napkin with an orange inside!
It was sectioned and peeled, she smiled wide

How could this be, that it was for her
There must be some mistake, for sure
But she saw it with her own eyes
They had each given a piece to make her a surprise

10th Day of Christmas

[10 cute cups and 10 cocoa packets - we used peppermint cocoa]

Peppermint and chocolate – drink them up
Use one of your 10 cocoa packets in a cup
If the weather is cold and you want to get warm
This will be perfect when you come in from the storm

With the family all together, stir it in
Enjoy the rich taste - let the party begin
Time for each other, time for smiles
A break from your tasks, even though there are piles
Feel the heat through the cup in your hands
Take a deep breath – briefly ignore all demands

Kids, sip slowly and try not to spill
Be very careful, we know you will
And when you are done with your little mug
Everyone give Mom a great big hug!

11th Day of Christmas

[Attach this note to a plate of your favorite holiday cookies. We used homemade oreos with green or red frosting inside]

11 colorful cookies are at your door
What’s that you say? You think there are more?
Oh well, we must have messed up the count
Extras for sharing, just the right amount

12th Day of Christmas

[Note is attached to an LDS Artist Calendar for 2010]

We bring you a tradition of Holiday Cheer
A countdown til Christmas is what we have here
One at a time, just watch things appear
We hope with your plans we won’t interfere

As the season brings lots of goods and greats
We like to remember what it celebrates
The birth of the Savior and the life He led
The things He did and the words He said
We hope this item will keep the spirit near
In the next 12 months of the calendar year

Ding and Ditch style

I have seen many versions of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" in songs and activities. Some of them funny, some get serious, and some are just plain wacky. I guess I had lots of exposure to it as a kid, and I just get a kick out of this tradition! So I got carried away with the idea and now I want to share how it applies to us this year.

Jake and I asked our bishop to choose a family in need of a little extra. It's a cute little family - Mom, Dad, and three little girls ages Five, Three, and One. We have been doing a countdown til Christmas for them by taking surprise gifts to their house each night - Ding and ditch style. I saw TONS of ideas on line following the traditional guidelines (...and a partridge in a pear tree) but decided that I wanted to give more practical gifts to a family who could really use some stuff. I have been racking my brain to come up with presents and poems to make it all worth while.
So I want to share our version one post at a time. I apologize in advance for the unusually large amount of posting I will be doing - Just bare with me for the next 12 posts!

I know it is too late for any of you to use this material, but maybe save it for next year? Mostly I just got excited about giving, and have to tell someone! It really does make you feel more Christmasy when you are keeping an eye out for people around you. I admit the rush of Christmas shopping and stress of budgeting cuts into the warm-fuzzies of the season ... But this little project has helped me feel those deep down values and principles - The Spirit of the Holiday. It has been nice to consciously set aside time for someone else and not allow my "To Do List" to consume me. I am grateful for an amazing husband who supports me in this and who is constantly an example of generosity.
